AMC CouponsToday is the 95th birthday of the legendary actor Kirk Douglas, but did you know that’s not his real name?

Born Issur Danielovitch Demsky, Douglas started his humble beginnings in Amsterdamn, New York on December 9, 1916.

Acting isn’t his only lifetime achievement, this accomplished and world famous star is a man of many talents, including being a wrestling champion from Saint Lawrence University in upstate New York. Douglas was also a WWII (world war II or world war 2) veteran and survived 4 years at sea with the U.S. Navy.

A family man (with four children and seven grandchildren), actor, author, WWII vet.. this man has had many accomplishments but also many tragedies as well. In addition to the loss of his son Eric Douglas, he also survived a helicopter crash that killed two other people in 1991 and later a stroke. It’s true though, you can’t keep a good man down. Douglas suffered speach impairments from his stroke however he recovered and wrote a book titled “My Stroke of Luck.”

The American Film Institute lists Douglas as “the greatest male American screen legends of all time,” which is no small accomplishment. He has also received 25 awards in his acting career.
